Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, 29 of the world, begins the 2011 season playing the Brazil Open – Bahia 2011, beginning on Feb. 7, at Costa do Sauipe. Champion of the only ATP tournament held in the country 11 years ago, Ferrero comes to Bahia as the same provision last year, and in search of the Open championship in Brazil.
Last year, former world No. 1 and known as “King of Gravel” won the 12 titles on this floor, began the season with the title of the Brazil Open. The following week, he repeated the feat at ATP Buenos Aires, and shortly thereafter, was the vice-champion of the ATP Acapulco.
“My income in February last year, tournaments in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, was nearly perfect. I hope that this season, although it is difficult, get me out equally well,” said Ferrero.
The Spaniard, who considers himself “half” of Brazil for much of the country and like to have a house in Bahia, close to Costa do Sauipe, is five months away from the courts because of two surgeries on his knee and wrist. “Neither went to Australia to have more time to recover and get back in better condition,” he said. “That’s five months without playing tournaments, but I hope to be competitive this season,” he continued.
