The duo of world number one and newly-five-times champions of the Australian Open, formed by brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, cleared late on Tuesday its participation unprecedented in Brazil Open – Bahia 2011.
In a statement sent to Koch Tavares, John Tobias, President of Lagardere-Tennis Unlimited, said Bob Bryan suffered a sprained left shoulder during the playing of the Australian Open mixed doubles and that will mean three to four weeks out of the loop.
“Bob Bryan did an MRI on Monday morning, shortly after returning from Melbourne. The results came out today (Tuesday) morning and unfortunately he is unable to play in the coming weeks,” said Tobias.
The statement explains that Bob retired from competition in the Australian Open mixed doubles just because of the injury. “Bob can only complete the last three games (they were champions) after taking high doses of drugs against pain.”
“It’s a pity we can have the best duo in tennis history at the Brazil Open. I’m sure the public was eager to see them in action. Unfortunately, these things happen in sport and we can not predict. We want a quick recovery by the brothers Bob and luck for the rest of the season, “lamented Procopio Luiz Carvalho, director of the Brazil Open 2011.
