Australian Open organizers today announced that the cast of the hit show Hairspray will make a special on-court appearance at the women’s final on Saturday 29 January 2011.
The cast, headed by the energetic Jaz Flowers (Tracey Turnblad) and Jack Chambers (Link Larkin) will perform a medley from the musical sensation that has conquered Broadway, the West End, and now Melbourne.
Jaz Flowers will also perform the Australian national anthem for the live audience of 15,000 in Rod Laver Arena and a national and international television audience of millions.
Flowers and Chambers, in full costume, checked out Rod Laver Arena this week, sneaking onto centre court to watch world No.3 Novak Djokovic at practice.
Flowers is a keen tennis fan, having attended back in 2000 and watching the star-studded doubles combination of Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce.
She cited Spanish star Fernando Verdasco as her current favorite, but both she and Chambers tipped world No.2 Roger Federer as most likely to hoist the trophy in 2011.
Both performers are looking forward to performing in Rod Laver Arena, with Flowers treasuring memories of performing here as a 12-year-old in the State School’s Spectacular.
“I still remember what it was like coming out in front of all of these people, and it was nerve-wracking but it was so exciting. I can’t wait to do it again,” Flowers said.
Hairspray is currently playing at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.
