New Year’s resolutions from the Queens of the court

What does world No.6 and 2010 French Open finalist Samantha Stosur have in common with the rest of us mere mortals? She comes up with New Year’s resolutions that seem impossible to keep.

“I was considering giving up French fries for a year,” Stosur said when asked about her resolutions for 2011.

Recognised as one of the fittest women on the tour it’s hard to believe Stosur even looks at French fries, much less has a weakness for them.

“But I’m not sure I’ll be able to stick to that….so maybe safer not to make that my resolution,” Stosur continued.  “So I think mine will be to stay healthy, fit, happy, and enjoy what I’m doing.”

Supermum and world No.3 Kim Clijsters’ plan for 2011 also has a familiar ring to it – she wants to be more organised.

“I’m not really good with electronics, and I’ve never been great at keeping track of my personal schedule on a computer or phone so I still use a diary to write everything in,” Clijsters said.

“I always start the year so neatly and I want to keep it like that but I usually find that by one month in I have scribbles and crossings out everywhere and it’s all messy, so that’s going to be my resolution – be more organised with my planning!”

World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki’s response was “Tough question! This year my resolution was to focus on something positive from each day, even if every now and then you might be feeling a bit sad, it’s just important to find something positive.

“So I think for next year I’ll be continuing to do that and focusing on being happy.”

Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic also made a surprising revelation, promising “not to be so lazy at times!

“People don’t know, but I can be quite lazy sometimes, so I’m going to be working on that for 2011!”

French Open champ and Italy’s Fed Cup star Francesca Schiavone’s plans for 2011 are simple. “To be better and improve every day of my life.”

And the last word goes to Russia’s elegant Elena Dementieva who made an emotional retirement at the end of the season in Doha.

“My New Year’s resolution is to own a dog!”
