Harry Hopman…the Hopman cup; I think of Harry and the list of players he help develop. It’s practically an Aussie who’s who of tennis: Rod Laver, “The Rocket Laver,” Ken Rosewall, “Muscles,” Fred Stole, John Newcombe, Tony Roche, Roy Emerson, “Emmo,” Lew Hoad. That’s just a few off the top of my head. There were dozens if not a hundred more…all household names worldwide. What we today would call “globally.” I forgot those were some of his Australia guys. There were women players as well. He also came to the United States and had influence on America’s talent.
I’m blessed. I spent time with Harry (Tennis God) and he would be distraught over the attitude of the young Aussie guys today. These “puppies” are undoing over 100 years of Aussie sportsmanship globally… You guys know who I’m referring to…
The great Aussies! That’s what I know. Generation after generation…the true journeymen who leave their homes so far away to travel the globe and play tennis. 10sballs.com applauds the Aussies…
The “Woodies,” both Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge played top singles and doubles. Phil dent and Taylor. Fred Stolle and Sandon Stolle. Mark Kratzmann and Andy. Paul Hanley. Wayne Arthurs. Jordon Kerr, Scott draper, Mark draper, Todd Larkham, Brent Larkham, Pat Cash, and Pat Rafter. All of these guys are great individuals. Great mates. Good sports. They represent their country in a positive fashion. This younger generation are bad sports. There were a few lazy guys all the time, but rarely bad sports.
I think of Harry often. He often answered about his coaching techniques and reiterated that there wasn’t a particular philosophy. Every player is different. He believed in building on what you have. He would say you couldn’t treat Emmo and Stolle the same way when it came to training.
Finally, 10sballs.com says Happy New Year! We have tons of new stuff coming to the site in 2011, including a new look…
