In 15 days, the AAMI Classic will commence. On the 12th – 15th of January, the matches will be played at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, the Spiritual home of tennis. Only 10 minutes away from Rod Laver arena, it’s the perfect location for the players to get some matches before the first Grand Slam of the year.
AAMI Classic is the premier lead up event to the Australian Open. This year’s signed players are Jurgen Melzer, Nikolay Davydenko, Gael Monfils, Mikhail Youzhny, Tomas Berdych, Jo Wilfred-Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco and Australia’s number one Lleyton Hewitt.
Tournament director Colin Stubs is delighted to have Lleyton in the strong field of players. It was Stubs who delivered Hewitt’s wild card at the Adelaide tournament back in 1998, where Lleyton went on to beat Andre Agassi, to then go on and win his first tournament.
Lleyton Hewitt expressed in his media conference earlier this month, that he is honoured to play at the event. He believes the AAMI Classic to be the best preparation for his Australian Open campaign, and it’s about trying something different to previous years.
Another addition to this year’s event is the Legends. Confirmed players are Pat Cash, Mats Wilander, Henri Leconte, Mikael Pernfors and Mansour Bahrami. Last year Cash and Leconte played a very entertaining match after the finals, which was very much appreciated by the crowd.
