George Morgan of Great Britain and Lauren Davis of USA were crowned champions in Key Biscayne as they clinched the boys’ and girls’ singles titles at the Orange Bowl, the last Grade A event of the year on the ITF Junior Circuit.
Morgan, 17, became the first British player to win the prestigious junior singles title in the 18-and-under age category, dropping just one set en route to the title. The No. 9 seed, who had never previously won a Grade A event, eased to a 62 63 victory over Dutchman Jannick Lupescu in the final.
“I knew Lupescu had a good backhand but I was able to force him into repeated errors,” said Morgan. “I have to admit my serve helped me to close the match out in the second set.”
Davis, 17, continued her incredible three-week winning streak on the ITF Junior Circuit by picking up her 18th straight victory in 21 days. The No. 8 seed, a winner at both the Yucatan World Cup and Eddie Herr International tournaments before travelling to Key Biscayne, had to fight hard to beat compatriot Grace Min 63 67(7) 61, becoming the 30th American player to be crowned girls’ singles champion at the Orange Bowl since 1947.
“I wanted to take this Orange Bowl title so badly,” said Davis. “I was very nervous going into the match, but I usually benefit from my nerves. I wanted to win and I wasn’t going to let my fatigue get in the way.”
Belgians Julien Cagnina and Jeroen Vanneste defeated Liam Broady and Nik Razborsek 76 46 [10-5] to win the boys’ doubles title, while unseeded Americans Lauren Herring and Madison Keys claimed the girls’ doubles trophy with a 64 06 [10-8] victory over Margarita Gasparyan and Ganna Poznikhirenko.
