The entire 10sBalls.com team would like to congratulate Esther Vergeer on her 400th successive singles victory! She defeated Jiske Griffioen in the first of the women’s semifinals at the 2010 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters. You are true inspiration for all and a fabulous role model for the sport of tennis!
Earlier this week, we highlighted 17 year old Esther in an old issue of TennisWeek (Nov 26, 1998). She surprised the defending champion and top seed Daniela Di Toro to capture the singles title and won the doubles title with partner Sonja Peters. While young Esther was already becoming a force with those wins, her 400 straight win streak actually began a few years later.
It was the beginning of February 2003 at the Sydney International tournament, Esther again faced Daniela Di Toro but lost 1-6,4-6. However, the feeling of defeat would soon fade away as a distant memory.
A few days later, Esther began at the 2003 Australian Open. Her opening match against Yuka Chokyu ended in a victory, winning 6-1, 6-2. That win was her first in what has now become 400 straight single victories. Finishing off the Aussie Open, she would replay and defeat Daniela Di Toro in the semi-finals, 6-1, 6-4 and won outright by defeating Maaike Smit, 6-2, 6-2.
The rest we can say is history.
Congratulations Esther!
