The Dutch pair of Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink became the first combination to win the Camozzi Doubles Masters men’s title on three occasions when they defeated Robin Ammerlaan and Stephane Houdet 76 64 in the final in Palazzolo, Italy on Sunday.
Aniek van Koot and Sharon Walraven secured victory in the women’s doubles and Andrew Lapthorne and Peter Norfolk became the first all-British winners of the quad doubles.
The Japanese duo of Yoshinobu Fujimoto and Shingo Kunieda slipped to a 16 62 36 loss to defending champions Scheffers and Vink in the last four, while top seeds Ammerlaan and Houdet overcame former champions Martin Legner (AUT) and Satoshi Saida (JPN) in their semifinal.
The top two seeded pairings in both the women’s doubles and quad doubles fought out close contests in both the roundrobin phase of the competition and in their respective finals. Van Koot and Walraven justified top seeding in the women’s doubles, holding on for a 63 06 75 victory over British duo Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley on the second day of play, before wrapping up a 75 63 victory in the final.
Meanwhile, second seeds Lapthorne and Norfolk fought out two three-set matches against America’s four-time quad champions Nick Taylor and David Wagner, eventually ending Taylor and Wagner’s title defence 46 61 63 in the final.
Saturday’s penultimate day of play saw Kunieda and Scheffers partner Italy’s tour players Andreas Seppi and Fabio Fognini in an exhibition match to entertain the crowds before the men’s semifinals. For more information visit www.itftennis.com/wheelchair.
