The BNP Paribas Open, along with BNP Paribas and reBounces, will hold “Rally, Roundup & Recycle,” a tennis ball recycling competition among tennis clubs, school tennis teams, community tennis programs and other tennis organizations in the Southern California area, it was announced today by tournament director Steve Simon.
The goal of the competition, which runs from December 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011, is to collect 100,000 or more used tennis balls; the approximate quantity of tennis balls used during the first two years of BNP Paribas’ sponsorship of the tournament and the projected usage for the 2011 event. Southern California tennis organizations that wish to participate must sign-up by Tuesday, November 30. Beginning in December participating programs can start collecting old tennis balls, filling boxes with 250 to 500 balls. FedEx Ground is partnering with reBounces to provide the shipping, which will be free of charge to the competition participants.
The top three organizations that collect and send the most used tennis balls will be recognized on Stadium Court at the BNP Paribas Open (March 7-20, 2011). They will also receive access to a luxury suite at the tournament for a day and corresponding night session, and VIP parking passes. The seating and parking will be allocated to the first (16 seats), second (eight seats), and third (four seats) place finishers.
“The BNP Paribas Open is committed to becoming as environmentally responsible as possible,” said Simon. “We are continually seeking ways to reduce our carbon footprint, and the ‘Rally, Roundup & Recycle’ competition is just another way the event can work towards this goal.”
The BNP Paribas Open, BNP Paribas, reBounces and FedEx Ground will also once again collect used tennis balls on-site during the two weekends of the tournament (March 12-13 and March 19-20) by offering patrons that bring at least six used tennis balls a free can of tennis balls. Over the first two years that this program was implemented at the tournament, close to 18,000 tennis balls were collected and recycled.
