Jelena Jankovic has revealed her health issues resulted in locker room at the WTA Championships in Doha with emergency measures being taken after the Serbian former world no.1 actually collapsed following her initial match against Vera Zvonareva.
“When I came in the locker room, I collapsed and I had a hard time,” admitted Jankovic who lost the match 6-3,6-0. “I really didn’t know where I was and I received an IV drip and really felt terrible for an hour or so.”
Jankovic insists she contracted a virus during her stay in Beijing for the China Open and then suffered additional sinus problems during last week’s Kremlin Cup in Moscow. However she insisted on playing in Doha and added: “It was tough to see how I was going to be. I didn’t really want to make any early decisions. I just wanted to see how I was going to feel the next day.”
She managed to recover sufficiently to make the court for her second match against Kim Clijsters but lost 6-2,6-3 to effectively end any hopes of qualifying for Saturday’s semi-final.
With a day off to recover, she remains open minded about playing her last group match against Victoria Azarenka on Friday. “Obviously I’m feeling tired and weak,” reported Jankovic. “I’m maybe at 20% of my ability. I didn’t train today. I just did the best that I could on the court. But I’m a fighter. I don’t like to give up, no matter what.
Jankovic revealed she is now immune to the antibiotics prescribed to her in Moscow and is now on a course of different medication. “I knew that my tennis is not really there and my fitness is not there, but still I came here to play and do whatever I could do,” she said. “That’s just how I am and how my personality is. I kind of never give up.”
