Young, Sweeting, Kendrick And Matosevic Move Into The Semifinals At Calabasas

Expect fireworks on Saturday when top-seeded Donald Young and Marinko Matosevic take the court at the USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas at the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center.

The top-seeded player and defending champion Young, a 21-year-old from Atlanta, Ga., beat former Top 60 ATP Tour player Amer Delic, 7-5, 7-6 (2) in a Friday quarterfinal and will next face Matosevic in a Saturday semifinal around 6 p.m.

The Young-Matosevic match should be intriguing for the simple fact that the Australian Matosevic has already beaten Young three times this year, including the final of the Aptos $75,000 Challenger in July.

“There should be some fireworks tomorrow,” Young said. “It should be fun. It’s always a little more fun when there’s some tension in the air.”

Matosevic also beat Young in the second round of qualifying at Indian Wells (8-6 in a third-set tiebreaker) and in the second round of the Sacramento Challenger just two weeks ago.

Young admitted he didn’t circle Matosevic’s name when the draw sheet was released, but he also didn’t deny watching his results earlier. “You see everyone in the draw so I haven’t been looking out for just him,” Young said. “The match before his last one he he was down a set and a double-break so you never know. Tomorrow’s a new day. I shouldn’t be thinking about revenge but it’s hard not to.”

Robert Kendrick, the No. 3 seeded player and a former All-American from Pepperdine, got past 18-year-old American Ryan Harrison, 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-4, in his quarterfinal in an entertaining mid-day match watched by an enthusiastic 300 fans in attendance.

In a late match on Friday, No. 2 seeded player Ryan Sweeting beat former Calabasas resident Lester Cook, 6-2, 6-0 and will meet Kendrick in the final match on Saturday night.

Kendrick had never played Harrison before but was impressed with his game. “I played doubles with him at the U.S. Open so I’ve hit with him quite a few times,” he said. “He’s got a great game and a great future. It’s not the best for serving big today with the cold. I thought I would have the advantage there but he’s got a live arm and also served well.”

He added: “I could have got him there in the second set. I had love-40 to go up 2-0 and 15-40 to go up 3-1. I would have liked to have put him away there but he’s a good fighter out there. I had to bring my A game to beat him today and I did. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. “

Play begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday with a doubles semifinal followed by both singles semifinals.
