Jurgen Melzer played the giant-killer role during the Shanghai Masters as he defeated No. 1 players in both singles and doubles. The Austrian who beat Rafael Nadal in the third round claimed the prestige title in doubles alongside Indian Leander Paes.
The pair got to the final and earned the title as a one-off pairing after eliminating the No. 1 Bryan brothers in a semi-final upset.
“Jurgen has an amazing blend of (singles and doubles,” said Paes, “This week is just a sure example of that. He’s beaten two No. 1’s in the same week: Rafa hasn’t lost too many sets, yet matches. Then the Bryan brothers.
“It’s a big honor to play with Jurgen. Not only is he a Grand Slam champion at Wimbledon this year, but I consider him one of the great talents in tennis and a good guy.”
Melzer has been dabbling in doubles all season, winning Wimbledon with another part-time partner, German Philipp Petzschner. And there was no hiding the satisfaction form the Roland Garros singles semi-finalist, still a force at age 29.
“Beating two No. 1’s in the same week is great. But finishing it off with a title, it’s my first title in a Masters Series event. We decided in Bangkok to play together, I think we can match up great.
It was a great week. I enjoyed it. And let’s hope that there’s many like this to come.”
