After multiple tennis trips to China, Roger Federer feels he is gaining an understanding of the vast nation billed as not only the next world superpower but also the most fertile field for the expansion of tennis.
The Swiss No. 3 personifies the sports in the People’s Republic along with Rafael Nadal, both of whom drew in the fans for the Shanghai Masters. Federer showed his own appreciation for the foreign culture by taking some Mandarin lessons during the Shanghai Masters and also fronts a Mercedes-Benz tennis youth development effort specifically for China.
“I came here for the first time eight years ago, obviously I’ve had some incredible success here,” said the winner of two year-end Masters Cup editions (2006-2007) in the sprawling commercial capital. “This has been one of my most successful hunting grounds when it comes to tennis
“I think the fans feel that I like coming to this part of the world, not just for the tennis tournaments, but I can even imagine myself coming over here for vacation or spending some time in Asia in general.”
Federer said that his interests off the court range to China itself. “I’m interested in a country that has so much history like China. That’s why I’m happy I have so many fans around the world, but especially here in China.”
