Rafael Nadal, normally noted as something of a tennis superman, is trying to conserve strength while at the same time going for victory as the world No. 1 admits to facing fatigue at the end of a long season.
Nadal is into his third straight week in Asia, a post-US Open run which took him to the Bangkok semi-finals and a title in Tokyo last weekend over Gael Monfils. With his seventh title of 2010 in his pockets – and that haul also includes three of the four grand Slams – the Spaniard admits that his reserves are starting to dry up.
“The season is long, but I’m fine. I’m happy to be here and happy to be healthy. For sure, I’m more than happy with how the season has gone. Mentally, in this part of the season, it seems like is never gonna end. But that’s our sport.
As it is, Nadal will have to give his all this week at the Qi Zhoing centre, then pause for three weeks before playing the Paris Bercy Masters and the season-ending World Tour Finals in London, both in November.
“Now the last three tournaments remain. Sure I’m more tired every day, practice every day, the concentration to prepare the match is probably more than playing the match. But because the motivation, the feeling when you go on court, full stadiums, these things, everything is easier.
“When you see that people supporting you like this, that gives you more power to keep working hard and to try to do it a little bit more.” Nadal begins his campaign in the second round against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
