Federer arrived in Shanghai at the weekend after a stopover for a sponsor obligation in Hong Kong and has spelled out the way that his elite advisory team is coming together. From the Federer point of view, there is no competition and no clashing.
Roger Federer maintains he is rejuvenated and ready for action after a month long break from competition after the US Open and looking forward to freshening up his approach with new ideas from his new coaching partnership with Paul Annacone.
The Swiss headed straight for his regular training base in Dubai after losing out to Novak Djokovic in the semi-final at New York. A bout of influenza meant Annacone wasn’t able to spend as long there with his new charge as initially planned but Switzerland’s Davis Cup captain Severin Luthi held the fort.
“Paul was only able to come to Dubai for the end of the build up because he got sick but he’s going to come here,” said Federer on his arrival in China for the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters. “So we didn’t have that much time together to work on stuff with Paul but he’s in constant talks with Severin. We’re working on the right things.”
Luthi will accompany Federer to upcoming tournaments in Stockholm and Basel while Annacone will link up with the pair at Paris-Bercy and then London for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
The American will then be ever present during the off season preparation again staged in Dubai.
“In February we’ll have another buildup (before Dubai), we’ll see who’s gonna be there. Things are going well with Paul. I had a long enough test period to figure out if I liked what he was saying, and I did. I thought it was something different, something new, with a lot of experience. I’m looking forward to the upcoming weeks: this week and the rest of the year with him.”
The Shanghai event will be Federer’s first without wife Mirka and twin daughters Charlene Riva and Myla Rose for company. “It’s a bit slower, that’s for sure,” he said. “But I have good friends here and it’s busy anyway. I have a lot of things to do with some of my sponsors so I’m kept busy. Obviously, it also allows me to sleep a bit more and practice hard. But clearly it’s a different week this time around that they’re not here. I do miss them of course.”
