Q: How satisfied are you with your game today?
PETZSCHNER: I won. That’s the first that counts. But I am not satisfied with my forehand and partly my returns. I had absolute blackouts and also some bad first serves. But I fought my way through. I kept on trying to change things during the match. Partly I succeeded, partly I didn’t. In the end I won deservedly and quite evenly. That is what counts.
I got a bit upset when I didn’t use my break chance at 4:0. Because if it were 5:0 you know that the match will be over in five minutes. Then, he played a great return game at 4:1, then it was 4:2, 4:3. Then things get close again. But fortunately I played well again and hardly did mistakes and decided the match in my favour.
Q: It is the fourth time you made it to the semis this year?
PETZSCHNER: Yes, that is very good I really play good tennis. The fourth semi-finals on three different surfaces. Meanwhile I play quite solidly on all surfaces. It is my second semi-finals in Germany, after Munich. That is great that I can present myself like that for the home crowd. I hope that I will play a good match tomorrow.
Q: Roger Federer is your role model tenniswise?
PETZSCHNER: I think tenniswise he is the role model of every other tennis player. He is just the best ever. He has the most beautiful strokes, moves easily and is the most complete player. If he wins – I don’t want to underestimate ‘Kohli’, he always plays good matches here in Halle, but if Federer wins a small dream of mine will become true. I always wanted to play him. And if this is here in the semis, it’s even nicer.
Q: How are you going to prepare yourself for the match against Federer? Will you watch video tapes?
PETZSCHNER: No, I have watched him often enough and know what to expect. It is evident if he can play his best tennis, I won’t have a chance to beat him. But I have to believe in my chances. I will try everything, fight for every ball and see whether it will be enough.
The following is a press interview from Philipp Petzschner following his win over Lukas Lacko, 6-4, 6-3, at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.
Q: Your wife had a little dog in the box. What’s his name?
PETZSCHNER: That’s my fighting dog. His name is Duke, he’s our security dog. In Munich he is already known and gets a security badge every year to be my watchdog.
