Former Wimbledon junior champion Laura Robson was first up at the Aegon Classic today against the number three seed Yanina Wickmayer. She battled well against the current world number 16 and broke her early in the second set, but eventually lost 5-7, 4-6.
“They were tough conditions out there today. I started off quite well with my serve, but I could definitely have done better,” said Robson. “It was difficult underfoot, but it was the same conditions for both of us so I can’t complain. I could have played a lot better, but I can take a lot from today as well.”
Anne Keothavong’s match against Na Li was moved onto one of the outside courts. Li took the first set and then rain forced a break in the match which Li went on to win 6-2, 6-4.
Maria Sharapova strolled into the quarterfinals after finishing two matches today. She won in straight sets over the American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-0, 6-3 and then had her second victory over Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-1.
“It wasn’t the first time I had played two matches in a day – I did it a few weeks ago in Strasbourg , so I’m used to that and it was good to warm up and play a set this morning,” Sharapova said. “I’ve had three or four good days of practice on the grass here. My serve feels good and my rhythm is getting back into place, especially on grass.”
Defending champion Magdalena Rybarikova went out to Sesil Karatantcheva in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6.
