The following interview is Andreas Beck’s press conference following his 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4) win over Nicolas Kiefer at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.
Q: Congratulations. The match really offered quite a lot at the end. It could have gone faster, couldn’t it?
BECK: Yes, that would have been great. But it happened exactly as I had said. We know each other very well. We both know how we have to play, especially on grass. It wasn’t an easy match because ‘Kiwi’ returned and served well, especially in the second and third set. My forecast was correct, 7-6 in the third. I would have wished that it were different but the main thing is that I won.
Q: ‘Kiwi’ seemed really calm during the first one and a half sets, didn’t show any emotions, he was almost lethargic. Did you notice?
BECK: No, I don’t really pay attention to that. I tried to focus on myself and I’m not interest in what my opponent does. He actually served well during the second and third set and made life difficult for me. It was just a few points that decided in the end.
Q: How important were the hawkeye decisions?
BECK: I think not one hawkeye decision was in my favor, but that’s the way it is. I think it is great we have this system on grass because sometimes there are decisions you just doubt. So, I think the system is unbelievably good for the players. Unfortunately, it wasn’t on my side. But I’ll have another chance on Friday to change that. We’ll see.
Q: How do you rate your chances for the quarters?
BECK: There is not a lot to say: it’s against Lleyton Hewitt. He plays unbelievably on grass, won Wimbledon, had two very good matches here. He is the clear favorite. I will just go out on Friday and try and play as powerful as today and then we’ll see what will happen. Of course, I want to win, that is out of the question, but he is the clear favorite.
Q: Will you do something special?
BECK: No, I think my game will keep him busy. If I have a good day and can play powerful … Of course, if that’s not enough, I will have to think of something. But I will try to play my powerful game, stay close to the line. It would be nice if it worked out but you never know how you feel on that day. So, we’ll see on Friday.
Q: But is it something special to play him?
BECK: Yes, it is special to play a former Wimbledon champion. He is also, deservedly, the former No. 1 of the world and gets the most respect of all players, also from me. So, I am looking forward to playing him. I hope it will be a nice match.
